Zen Den is a five week project and collaboration with Lou Emerson (Qigong Instructor) and Connor Grant (Oxygen Advantage Breathwork Instructor ). This project combines the moving meditation of Qigong and the anchoring of the Breath in a safe, supportive space in Old Market. This project is designed to foster senses of self & other compassion and individual/group expression.

What is Qigong meditation?

Qigong (气功) literally translates to “energy work” or “life force cultivation.” It dates back over 4,000 years and is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Taoism, Buddhism, and martial arts. The core goal of Qigong is to cultivate, balance, and direct the body’s vital energy (Qi) through gentle movement, breathing techniques, visualization, and stillness.

Why is Qigong/Breathwork related to Mental Health & Wellbeing:

  • The philosophy of both Qigong and Breathwork allows us to tune into our bodies in an intentional, compassionate way. Which often helps people with their inner ‘chatter’ or overthinking, anxiety.
  • Qigong especially, can be engaged with at different speeds and progressions. Increasing a sense of autonomy whilst learning movement flows in your own space or collectively as a group.
  • The sessions will also have multi-sensory elements, and relate to our inner and outer nature through visualizations.
  • Connecting to our breath also benefits our sleep, stress response and ability to be present for different day-day scenarios

First session theme

Welcoming into the space, introductory exercises and grounding practices. What is Qigong, Breathwork and how are these practices good for our mental health?
