Sports Works and Crux Climbing will be running two weeks of  free outdoor climbing sessions for young people aged 14-18 years at Snuff Mills (BS16).

Following on from our recent bouldering programme. Sports Works and Crux Climbing will be running two weeks of  free outdoor climbing sessions for young people aged 14-18 years at Snuff Mills (BS16). A summer holidays offer as part of our ongoing Sport & Exercise wellbeing initiatives.  The sessions will be running on Monday 4th August 10-3pm and Monday 11th August 10-3pm with allocated slots on a ‘first-come’ basis. There are 6 spaces available per week. *3 of these spaces are prioritised for young people who are care-experienced.

The course is all about meeting new people in a safe space, supporting your mental wellbeing with the mindfulness of bouldering, developing climbing and movement skills and having fun!

All equipment for the course will be provided by Crux, however attendees should have suitable clothing for outdoor climbing.

We will be travelling via 7-seater taxi from Off The Record’s office in Old Market, BS2 0BH to Snuff Mills Park & Garden.

Who is this session for?

Anyone aged 14-18 who feels that this course would support their wellbeing and mental wellness. You don’t need to have any prior experience of climbing to attend.

Course attendees will be always supported by Crux Climbing members of staff and volunteers and Sports Works Coordinator; Connor Grant.

How does this relate to mental health?

Climbing has a strong reputation as a mindfulness-based movement activity, with climbers engaged in the present moment. It can enhance self-esteem and confidence as you learn new skills and develop your cognitive abilities in problem-solving and pattern-matching. Bouldering and climbing communities are renowned for being respectful, socially inclusive and supportive spaces.

A note from our partner – Crux Climbing & Access Info

“We offer climbing sessions to those who aren’t greatly represented in the climbing community, whether that is due to their financial security, ethnicity, ability, social, emotional, gender identity, class or sexuality, mental or physical health or ability.

We have a specific skill set in complex rigging which means we can create more opportunities for those with reduced mobility to access climbing venues.”
